Artspark #14

Write a short poem (12 lines or less) or a short-short story (100 words or less) in which you include a common proverb, adage, or familiar phrase that you have altered in some way.

She would have liked to go dancing
But she was saving for the future;
She would have liked to travel
But she was building her nest egg.
She would have liked to buy the scarf that matched her eyes
And the brooch that was perfect for her friend's birthday
And a hot drink for the homeless guy on the corner
And that goat for a family in Africa
But she was saving for her old age.
Now she watches the world from her window:
She won't go out, she's saving for her funeral.
A fool and her money are never parted.
